that old junk

a favourite activity of the kids is to get my old teenage jewellery out and sort through, trying everything on and deciding who will get what when they are grownups. Orlando pretty much misses out on everything, but he is happy to be receiving the chunky rings and chunky chains, and unusual leather stone pendants, while Otilija has bagsed (is that a word?) the mulititude of 80's dangly earings and fine silver bracelets. I knew I kept all that old junk for a reason.

My daughter also loves going through my old "jewels", and apparently thinks I was once(...) very stylish. It's hard to know what to keep when space is limited, but I remember swooning over my mama's costume jewellery, too.

If only I had girls to swoon, one of a couple of things I miss about having boys. The other thing is those cute Pippy Longstocking tights, I sometimes covet a little daughter to put in rainbow tights and look through my pile of junk-jewels.

Happy Easter!

My daughter also love going through my old (rather garish) jewelry. I love looking at it through her eyes.

oh! my girls love to do that. last time they kept all of my old badges of jim morrison, talking heads, elvis costello and the like. ok they aren't jewels, those they left behind, the chunky lucite bracelets and such, but the badges are now sportin a new home on their messenger bags. they have to keep explaining to friends who the dudes are...

Oh cute! I keep a lot of my favorite less expensive fun pieces for the same reason (hoping to have kids). I was recently thinking of taking some of my very favorites and framing them like masterpieces all by themselves. Then I may create a simple gallery.

This is obviously a universal kid thing! My daughter also loves to go through my 'jewels'. In fact if she's quiet and I'm not sure where she is, she can often be found sneaking into our room to get the jewellery box off my dressing table. Now I try to buy really cheap jewellery whenever those places like Diva and Accessorize have sales, just to feed her obsession :)

(Thanks so much for your kind thoughts when my daughter was sick. She's at home and all better now :) )

I have lots of good memories doing that with my mom's jewelry box...I loved the palm tree earrings. My niece and daughters now do that. Such a simple thing and brings such enjoyment.

That's so nice to let them play with your stuff, it gives them a real identity of who their mum is and was. I used to love playing with the stuff from the past at the bottom of my mums cupboard. Old handbags, high heeled shoes broken brooches odd earrings, how lovely!

very sweet! i was the same as a kid. it's basically like finding treasure - and i do believe that jewellery holds the energy of the wearer and so i think people/kids pick up on that and it's like all these stories just start pouring through their brains.

happy school holidays!

I always had a blast going through my grandmother's jewelry box. It was loaded with costume jewelry. I'd wear long black crystal chandeliers from my earlobes, and a matching kaftan and gold house slippers! Stylish!
