Modern quilt along - update

I am doing 'unfinished business' for the modern quilt along that is being run by dioramarama. In a previous post I had chosen fabrics. For those of you without the book and therefore unfamiliar with this quilt design, this is what I am aiming for.

I have started on the lightest colour first and have gotten as far as making up large squares to now piece together to make the first colour band.

these are some of the fabrics that you see here.

Kelly over at Buzzville is also making this quilt, and she gave some great tips - which I didn't quite understand until I started to make it.
  • Basically this quilt requires strip piecing irregular shapes onto a strip, then trimming and strip piecing those pieces onto strips, and keep doing until you end up with largish pieces which you can start piecing together.
  • Again I made some mistakes (even with pre-warning) I cut too many irregular pieces and not enough strips, and cut some of the irregular pieces too small. But I could counter some of these issues - and minimise wastage when trimming, by spending a lot of time piecing together squares of same size and angled in the same direction.
  • So now I have largish squares that I must piece together to make a 50cmx220cm strip for the first colour band.

Beautiful colors and beautiful fabrics. Kind of a crazy quilt concept - I've made one crazy quilt and had so much fun seeing the pieces come together into squares. The hard part was arranging the squares in a way that pleased me.

It's looking incredible! What fun fabric for that row! And, I must say that I'm a wee bit relieved that I wasn't the only one mucking up some of the cutting - although at the same time I'm sorry to hear you had the same problems (does that make any sense?!?). I think that Weeks and Ringle could probably add a little more detail to those cutting instructions...
