I finally received "the modern quilt workshop" by funquilts, from amazon. So now I can properly join dioramama's modern quilt along. I have chosen "unfinished business" (see above) which is a modern take on the crazy quilt idea - however it is more structured in its colour and peicing - and it enables you to use up small pieces of fabric - in the right colours of course.
The first thing to do when making a funquilts quilt design is to think of the 'big idea', as this quilt will be for our bedroom I was originally thinking calm, sleep, peacefull thoughts etc. When I asked Rob what he thought - he wanted it to be sexy and seductive and luscious and rich - boudoir - ish. So thinking of these two concepts I thought red/pink blue/green - how can I get the colours to blend. With this quilt design the colours must shift value in hue or saturation.
I tried a few ideas using photoshop: The first two are completely boudoir inspired (and as they are my favourite colours I am particularly drawn to the them) the last two are a mix of the two ideas - I actually really like them but not sure if they will work. Any thoughts? What does chocolate brown to do you? and warm pink and rich redwine red?

Wow! I just came across the quilt along and now you are posting about it. It makes me want to join the fun!
I like the idea of making something that combines what you both want. Maybe there is a completely different color combo that would give you both the feeling you hoped for. Of course I am a bit prejudice to red in the bedroom since it seems to be a wake up color instead of a relax color. ;)
I like the first one, romance wise. So rich, and warm. The last one is my favorite from a color standpoint though. Very funky and playful. I wish, wish, wish I were crafty like that. I'm just not. So I'll have to live vicariously through you!
I'm partial to the first color scheme. Personally I really like chocolate and wine colors. To me they're warm, welcoming and soothing.
The last two don't work for me colorwise, unless really well executed (or your decor incorporates those colors already) I think they would end up looking a little kids room-ish.
I like the first two, but hey! It's you guys that'll be sleeping under it!
I like the first two as well .. very lush and comforting. But maybe it will be a bit hard doing the actually sewing with such closely matched colours? Anyway, you can't go wrong - they will all look fab :)
I think the second one. I like the first one, but I think the color shift is more drastic. the second one is softer-but all 4 are really lovely.I do think the drama will be more pronounced if you keep the rows in the same color family, like the first 2-
wonderful!
i'm very attracted to the second one kath without the bottom (brownish) color. i like the red/pink hues and think that could really work. thanks for letting me share my thoughts about your so personal quilt. good luck with it - i'm sure it will turn out fabulous!
we share the same favourite colours. the first 2 quilt ideas are the best. looking very forward to seeing your work in progress and final quilt kath.
How about a blend of the top two? The first is great but maybe the tones are too similar close together so need one or two slightly different shades to break it up. I also like the third minus the last colour. What a clever way to play with colour.
I like the first two the best - but I'm incredibly partial to anything with brown tones - reds and pinks look so fabulous with browns! Let me know when you get started - we can share tips and tricks as we move along!
I think I love that quilt. That would be great for the project that I am heading up fot Quilts for Kids GA,
wow you're brave! taking on the unfinished business. can't wait to see it in progress. I like the top two color schemes and I think you'll have good luck finding fabrics in those color ranges too. you're going to be so happy with the finished product. I saw this quilt at the FunQuilts studio and it's AMAZING!
i most love number two ... i like combos where my eye goes naturally from one color to the next. i think it's the designer in me. i'm very into things balancing, etc. i love these simple colors together!! good luck! mav
I love the first two as well - so beautiful. This looks like a big project (with a capital B!) I'm guessing it might be a bonus to use your favourite hues to keep you in love with the project as you go? Really looking forward to seeing your work in progress!
But the funniest thing is the gender divide re the bedroom decor. Women want relaxing, calm, and men want sexy and seductive!!!
Love the top two colour combos. I actually love the bottom one too, but it would be very brave. Maybe as Jane said, a mix of the first two.
You can take any two colors (red and blue for example) and determine the gradiation for each. I am going to number 1 as the lightest and 5 as the darkest. Line up both - pull the red 1 out and replace it with the blue 1, now take the red 4 out and replace it with the blue 4. (Or any two that you choose. The more gradiations you have the more you can pull out, but i would keep the ratio on the small side - 2:5, 3-4:10, etc.
BTW I am a regular reader, but i do not blog - yet.
