a list for better parenting

(Robs weekend mud oven bread)

I have been reading lots of home schooling blogs and natural parenting blogs and gardening, cooking and free range kids blogs and am inspired to be a better mother. So seeing as spring school holidays are upon us I have decided to do a few things, here is my list of 10 things for me to be a better mother and maybe a better person:
  1. turn off the TV unless I am desperate
  2. try to not become desperate - practice the art of distraction and observation - not get angry
  3. be calm, no yelling, no angry voices, be patient
  4. go for a nature walk everyday
  5. go swimming everyday (this one is taken care of - the kids are doing swimming lessons)
  6. play board games, do collage and craft activities, do cooking and sewing projects with the kids
  7. get the kids to help clean and tidy the house
  8. do a fun activity activity everyday
  9. get my parents to have the kids for a sleepover
  10. make lots of salads, eat lots of fruit, squeeze fresh juices, use brown rice and wholemeal flour, make my own muesli and muesli snack bars (no added sugar or fat)

Sounds like a plan! I hope it all goes well. I like the idea of number 9, a sleepover at the grandparents, i'd try for the whole week though! hehehe. Unfortunately my parents and in-laws live on the other side of the planet. Hmph.

i've been thinking of improving things too. your post has motivated me. thanks too for your reciepes, i have fussy eaters who refuse to eat my cooking and i've been discouraged ... i should try again.

It's so good to feel in 'control' of how our children live rather than feeling like we can't turn things around. I find the days are so much worse when I struggle against the effort required to entertain small children. But if you break the 'no yelling', 'no TV' rule don't be too hard on yourself. I can't wait to check out your links.

your list is so inspiring. there are many things there that I have been thinking so much about lately... it's comforting to know that I am not alone in some of my struggles a mother-- thanks so much for sharing this.

on a different subject, my mouth is watering at the sight of that bread.

one more thing to add to the list: "don't forget about myself and rob - make time for just the two of us EVERY DAY" :) above all, children need role models. show them what love is!

"do a fun activity everyday" sounds scary... it shouldn't be a part of a project, it's the most natural thing when you have kids, isn't it?

kisses for each of you :* :* :* :*

gosh, so many people don't even think twice about this kind of thing. it's an amazing mama who makes a LIST about it. you're very inspiring and i don't even have kids.
:) good luck with all of it and remember not to be too hard on yourself. if we spend all of our time looking at ourselves will we ever be in the moment?
:) mav

Hi, I just found your site and it is wonderful. I am facing a month on my own with my two kids when my husband goes away for business - Yikes! So, I am very grateful for your lovely list. Everyday I tell myself to be more patient, don't get stressed about the small things, play with them more, etc and it actually just made me feel like a bad Mum. 'Why don't these things just come naturally to me', I thought. Well, now I know they are something every Mum has to work on ... so good luck with them yourself! :)

I love visiting your blog! It hits right on the issues that are on my mind. The list is good. The no TV thing is the best. I grew up without one, period. And am greatful still. This summer I didn't watch any TV. Tonight, for the first time I did--to see what Martha's apprentice was all about--and was terribly bored. A collage, some paints, making bread. Anything is better really, because it is active, not passive. Your blog always reminds me of this--of the activity of daily life. Speaking of which, the October SPT is awesome!!!

I love your blog and visit daily. There's lots on your list that I *attempt* to practice too.
Even gettting your parents to look after one kid at a time can be wonderful. I'm doing that at the moment and it gives me time to spend with my little boy one-on-one and appreciate his adorableness!

Trying to catch up with all your great posts... it's so hard, isn't it - trying to continue to be a better parent. I'm really noticing my "angry voice" lately - must watch for that. But what do you do when they just won't listen - ignoring everything you say? Ugh...
